Adjustment of Status vs. Consular Processing
Once you have a qualifying pathway — family, employment, or the DV lottery — the next question is where and how you'll actually apply. That comes down to two tracks.
Adjustment of status
Adjustment of status (filed on Form I-485) is for eligible applicants who are already inside the United States. You apply to become a permanent resident without leaving the country, and in many cases can request work and travel authorization while your case is pending.
Consular processing
Consular processing is for applicants living outside the United States. After your underlying petition is approved and a visa number becomes available, you complete your green card interview at a US embassy or consulate in your home country, then enter the US as a permanent resident.
Why it matters
Each track has its own forms, fees, and potential complications — including issues that can arise if you leave the US while an adjustment of status case is pending. Getting this wrong can cause delays or, in some situations, more serious problems with your case.
