EB-2 vs. EB-3: Which Employment Category Fits?
EB-2 and EB-3 are the two employment-based categories most workers with a US job sponsor end up comparing, and the difference between them can meaningfully affect your wait time.
EB-2: Advanced degree or exceptional ability
EB-2 generally applies to roles requiring an advanced degree (or a bachelor's degree plus five years of progressive experience), or to individuals who can demonstrate exceptional ability in their field. Some EB-2 applicants can self-petition through a National Interest Waiver, skipping the employer-sponsorship requirement.
EB-3: Skilled workers, professionals, and other workers
EB-3 covers skilled workers (jobs requiring at least two years of training or experience), professionals with a bachelor's degree, and "other workers" in roles requiring less than two years of experience. EB-3 almost always requires an employer sponsor and a labor certification.
How to think about which applies
Start with your job's actual requirements and your own credentials, not which category sounds more prestigious. A licensed immigration attorney can review your degree, experience, and job offer to determine which category — and which visa bulletin line — genuinely applies to you.
